Tulum is a town on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and known the world over for its sandy beaches and well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city. It was also a major trading hub for both land and sea from Central America all the way down to the south into the Yucatán.

The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo (castle), perched on a rocky cliff above the white sand beach and turquoise sea. Near the ruins are the Parque Nacional Tulum, a coastal area with mangroves and natural limestone sinkholes (cenotes).

Tulum honoured the "diving god" or "descending god" and "the god of the bee" which, even today, is considered an important insect for the Maya.
